Falling off the Healthy Eating Wagon

By: Christopher Michael

The media has warned us, loud and clear: We are overweight as a nation and this is quickly becoming a medical problem. We continue to ignore healthy foods in favor of quick and immediate junk food. Just look at McDonald's, whose last quarter as at June 2008 saw the company report sales of $6 Billion. That's a lot of Quarter Pounders. And McDonald's is a great example because they are located everywhere; few of us can claim to rarely eat there.
I believe I have a healthy diet. Still, I treat myself to one day per week to an indulgence. This not only keeps me sane, but it helps keep my diet on track too. During these indulgences, I kick my healthy eating policy and drag myself through the Golden Arches and order my favorite - a Big Mac Combo!
Without question, eating one Big Mac per month or so will not kill anyone. But what happens when our urges take over and we find ourselves in that same line several times per week. As an active and food-conscious individual, falling off the Healthy Eating wagon begins a domino effect. First, my diet disappears. Slowly, I allow other foods into the house - mostly sweet-heavy treats like chocolate bars, cookies, specialty chilled coffees, sodas, etc. Then I lose energy and find it easier to sleep in than to worry about strength training or my cardio routine. This inevitably leads to a perpetual cycle of worse-eating, less-physical activity, and so on and so until I have gained a good 5 to 10lbs.
What really gets me is that I have just wasted all of my hard work of the prior six or so weeks! All of it is gone because I fell off that healthy eating wagon ouch.
Luckily for me, I recognize that my true appetite hungers for sweet foods. Better yet, I have discovered an alternative to several weeks of binge bad-food eating. My new answer to these cravings is Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet.
That's right, a COOKIE diet! Now, I wouldn't get carried away and suggest that you should sign up to weight with these little treats. To me, that makes as much as sense as losing weight by fasting. But for someone like me, someone who prefers to work out, to build muscle mass, to eat a balanced protein and carb diet to lose weight, well the cookie diet helps for those weak moments. Instead of turning to high-sugar, iced coffees or high fat double-fudge chocolate cookies, Dr. Siegal's helps me through a rough week.
The best part is that the cookies are high in protein - my old treats had next to no protein. Plus, they taste pretty good.
While my advice isn't to trade in your existing balanced, healthy diet, I would urge you to order a fair supply before you have your "urges." This is key. I never know when I might fall of the healthy eating wagon, and if those cookies aren't around, it's back to the Golden Arches and a few days later, I'm reaching into a bag of Oreos.
